Howth Road

Rebuild of a 1949 detached dwelling in the International Style.

We were asked for a house where the principal rooms would overlook the rear garden to the south, Bull Island, and Dublin Bay. The site naturally terraced to the south allowing a mezzanine family room to intersperse the bedroom levels. A garden room remains to the north entrance, capturing the evening sun. With the decision to remove the original roof and form a penthouse as a non-habitable extension, we managed to retain the basic shell – a valuable reference point within its suburban structure.

The house is finished in white napp, befitting the coastal location, and in keeping with the ‘White Style’ of the Raheny and Clontarf area. The entrance from the north is presented as a citadel but opens as a set of steps up from the Bay, naturally complimenting the client’s maritime interests.
